Mosquito Bay, Puerto Rico

Mosquito Bay is one of the brightest bioluminescent bays in the world. The water literally lights up when the tiny microorganisms called dinoflagellates are disturbed, creating a shimmering, neon blue-green glow. This is an amazing experience and not one to be missed, you can hire a glass-bottomed kayak and watch the neon trails you create by simply trailing your hand in the water or join your friends on a night-time boat tour and marvel at the bright colours.  Visit when you know that the moon will not be full to enjoy the experience to its full.

Cappadocia, Turkey

Cappadocia in central Turkey is famous for its tall, cone-shaped rock formations known as ‘fairy chimneys’!  This surreal landscape has been sculpted over millennia by volcanic eruptions and erosion. It is full of fascinating history and culture that stretches back to ancient times. People of the Cappadocia region carved houses, churches and monasteries from the soft rock of the volcanic deposits and visitors are able to see these dwellings and the superb frescoes that are still visible in some of them.

Hot-air ballooning is very popular in the region and is a great way to take in the unusual landscape. TripAdvisor

Wulingyuan Scenic Area, Hunan Province, China

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its towering sandstone pillars, deep ravines, and lush forests, which served as inspiration for the floating mountains in the movie “Avatar.” Visitors can explore the area’s natural beauty through hiking trails, glass-bottom bridges, and scenic cable car rides. There are more than 3,000 quartzite sandstone pillars and peaks across most of the site, many over 200 metres (660 ft) in height, along with many ravines and gorges with picturesque streams, pools, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. It features 40 caves, many with large calcite deposits and a natural bridge named Tianqiashengkong (meaning ‘bridge across the sky’), which is one of the highest natural bridges in the world!

The landscape here is unlike anywhere else on earth, a truly unusual  holiday destination. TripAdvisor

The Wave, Arizona, USA

The Wave is a mesmerizing sandstone formation located in the Coyote Buttes North area of the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. Its undulating, wave-like patterns make it a popular destination for photographers and hikers seeking a surreal and otherworldly experience. Due to the fragile nature of the formation and the large number of people wishing to visit it, a daily lottery system is used to dispense permits for up to 16 people and/or 4 groups (whichever comes first) two days before (visitors must apply within a geofence area encompassing the greater Kanab visitor centre, Vermilion Cliffs, and Page areas). Additionally, 48 people and/or 12 groups (whichever comes first) online permits for each date are available four months in advance of a planned trip. A map and information about the hike are supplied to those who have obtained permits.

The best time to photograph this unusual holiday destination are the hours around midday when the sun is overhead. It means that there are no large shadows cast, however, these also create a beauty of their own. It is really a unique place to visit. TripAdvisor
